Week 1 – How Important is Instructional Design?

Even after reading the thoroughly depressing article on the ADDIE “model”, I still believe that instructional design could be very beneficial to what I’d like to do. I really would like to get into the field of technical training; helping companies train employees on new technologies and bringing new employees up to date on current ones. So far during my two semesters in the program, I’ve learned a lot about graphic design, web development, and about the cognitive processes behind learning. The culmination of these skills into creating an electronic curriculum would be what I consider “instructional design”, and relates directly to my career goals. I’ve been doing a lot of personal study into the areas of graphic design and web development, also. As the article about ADDIE laments, instructional designers tend to have a broad range of skills, but are the masters of none. I think that in order to make ourselves more marketable, instructional designers should also try to specialize in areas they find most beneficial to them. For me, it’s the creative side; graphic design, video/audio technologies and web design. A lot of these skills are transferrable to other fields, such as marketing.

3. Actual instructional design! I’ve taken two semesters of classes learning the skills required for instructional design, it’ll be fun to actually apply it.

4. I specialize in macs; I worked at an apple store for over a year and am now the apple campus rep for UNT. I also work as a mac tech for an electronic recycling company. I have experience with Windows and Linux as well.
